While out Boxing Day shopping with my daughter and waiting patiently in the fitting rooms I looked up and noticed the design ideas all around me. It's not the first time I had seen great chairs, wallpaper or lighting. Many of these inspirations can be adapted and brought into our homes maybe on a smaller scale or in a different colour. So next time you are out for some retail therapy take a closer look around you at something other than the clothes, you might be surprised by what you see. I remember going into "Garage" and noticing right away each room decorated with brightly, coloured patterned wallpaper and funky chandeliers. You could use the same idea in your powder room or dining room. Also while waiting in "Aritzia" I saw the different textures and the "mood" lighting. I sat comfortably in some dramatic, glossy black , studded Louis chairs! They say people who use fitting rooms are likely to buy four times as much! Putting effort and creativity into design whether in our stores or our living spaces makes life more interesting! Take a look at these examples of retail design and take home some new ideas.... Get out there and go shopping for new ideas!

As I work as a decorator at my local Benjamin Moore store, I am always surrounded by colour and new inspiration. Is it any wonder I am always painting! Every year Benjamin Moore brings out new colour pallettes, using existing colours, but in a different way. It helps give us ideas and maybe encourage us to try something outside of our comfort zone. Seeing colours used in new combinations and maybe in places we don't normally use them, like the ceiling or the trim. For 2012 we are showing four groups of colour trends to start you off and get the decorating ball rolling.... Earth & Sky- Think nature! Organic, relaxing, comforting.
